Sheena Wilkinson

British author. Born in Belfast and studied at Durham University. She had already written a number of prize winning short stories and a literary criticism of the girl's school story genre before embarking upon her debut novel, the gritty young adult horse story Taking Flight. This highly accomplished debut won two prestigious Irish CBI Awards in 2011: The Honour Award for Fiction and the Children's Choice Award. On a slightly more modest scale it was also voted number 1 in the 'Post 2000 Pony Books' category of our Top 10s survey. (See the Top 10s web page)

After this great start Ms. Wilkinson went on to write an excellent sequel and also a pony novel for younger readers which I was lucky enough to read and review as an advance copy. See links for my 5 horseshoe rated review!

As well as writing, Ms. Wilkinson has completed an M.A. and works as an English teacher. She enjoys riding and admits she still loves reading all the old classic pony books which she feels are great comfort reading.

Declan Series:

1) TAKING FLIGHT
FIRST EDITION LITTLE ISLAND PB 2010
SUMMARY: Young adult novel. Declan lives on an impoverished Belfast estate, his cousin Vicki is a spoilt girl with a rich father and her own horse. When his alcoholic mother goes into re-hab, Declan is sent to stay with Vicki and her mother. He soon becomes drawn into the world of horses when he visits the stables owned by the redoubtable Camilla Brooke. He finds himself falling in love both with Vicki's horse Flight of Fancy and the idea of working with horses for a living and for a time it seems as if he may be able to escape his dreary existence and make a new life for himself. But jealousies and misunderstandings between the two mis-matched cousins spark off a tragedy…
PONYMAD VIEW: An excellent story which despite some hard-hitting content, manages to be not dreary but life affirming. Although this has plenty of horse content it is more a novel about two teenagers struggling with their emotions rather than a traditional pony story. It is extremely well written and hard to put down.
